Artist Celebrates Heritage Year-Round, Not Just in February

Growing up in the predominantly black township of Kingstree, South Carolina, John Pendarvis received his earliest arts education. 鈥淎rt was always around. My mother had cousins who did art,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ne of them who lived across the street from us would always come over and draw for us kids. He was the greatest artist I had ever known. So art was always there.鈥

SC Manufacturing Certification Now Available at PTC in McCormick County

鉴黄师app (PTC) is springing forward in March when it makes the South Carolina Manufacturing Certification (SCMC) available for the first time in McCormick County. Just as a mechanical spring can potentially store and release energy when pressure is applied, this certification allows those who experience stress from being unemployed or underemployed to potentially gain skills and deploy them immediately in the workforce. Quiet Grants Administrator Singled Out for Recognition

Caroline Chappell doesn鈥檛 have time to worry about awards or recognition. She鈥檚 too busy tweaking language 鈥 crossing the t鈥檚 and dotting the i鈥檚 鈥 on essential grant applications she produces in her role as grants administrator at 鉴黄师app (PTC). This past December, she learned that someone, indeed, had taken note of her hard work. She had been selected as one of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce鈥檚 鈥淕reenwood Stars Under 40鈥 award recipients.

B.C. Comic Strip Artist to Speak at Piedmont Tech Jan. 30

The late B.C. creator Johnny Hart imagined his caveman characters needed to develop language, so 鈥淲iley鈥檚 Dictionary鈥 became a regular highlight of his beloved strip. Delighting readers since 1958, B.C. continues today thanks to Hart鈥檚 grandson, Mason Mastroianni, who has carried on illustrating the strip (as well as Hart鈥檚 Wizard of Id) for about 13 years. Mastroianni will be on the Lex Walters-Greenwood Campus of 鉴黄师app to share insights from his career as a nationally syndicated artist and illustrator on Thursday, January 30, at 3:30 in the campus library.

As she walked off campus way back on her first day of classes at 鉴黄师app, graduation speaker Noel Johnson of Greenwood, pondered this question: 鈥淲hat could I accomplish if I took every opportunity I was given 鈥 even if I failed?鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when I decided I wanted to be the best student I could be.鈥 Ordinarily a quiet, reserved young woman, Johnson decided that, even if it was uncomfortable or unfamiliar, she indeed would 鈥渟ay yes鈥 to opportunities that came her way.
